Located in the mountainous region of Croatia, it lies between the Mala Kapela mountain range in the west and northwest and the Lička Plješivica mountain range to the southeast. With its extraordinary natural beauty, this area has long attracted nature enthusiasts.
The process of tufa formation, which results in the creation of travertine barriers and subsequently the lakes, is the park’s most significant feature. Due to this unique natural phenomenon, Plitvice Lakes was internationally recognized and inscribed onto the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.
The Plitvice Lakes National Park has an area of approximately 296 km² and is predominantly covered in forest vegetation, with smaller areas of grasslands.
